After seeing the photography and videography from our TR7 Hamplified coverage, The Rugby 7s booked us again. This time we travelled to Cheltenham Racecourse to cover their next tournament.

We once again provided sports photography and videography. The brief included an edited highlight film and a bank of photographs and raw footage that TR7 could continue to use.

There was one important change: the video needed to work in portrait. That shaped how we followed the action and how we built the edit.

THE PORTRAIT CHALLENGE

ROOM TO FOLLOW
THE PLAY.

Tracking several players through a narrow portrait frame leaves very little breathing room. As Sam put it, it is like using a laser pointer to light something up instead of a torch.

We tried different approaches and found that filming a little wider in 16:9 landscape gave us the room we needed. In the edit, we could crop and reframe for portrait while keeping the important action in view.

For this shoot, the wider framing meant backing off the tight zoom and accepting less of the compressed, blurred-background look we might otherwise choose. It was a worthwhile trade-off for the finished film.

Filming at 100 frames per second gave us four captured frames for every frame in a 25 fps edit. Played at quarter-speed, that footage provides smooth slow motion without inventing extra frames.

TR7 received all the raw footage and photographs alongside the highlight. That gives them options beyond this one video: training montages, new sequences and longer edits of the matches we covered.

It was a rewarding day to film, with TR7 finishing as unbeaten winners of the Social competition, as recorded in their Cheltenham tournament report.
