PHOTOGRAPHS WITH A PURPOSE

What will people see when the news goes out?

An announcement has a short opportunity to make an impression. The image should give someone a reason to stop, then enough information to understand the news. A new appointment calls for a confident introduction. A creative launch may need personality, collaborators or the work itself.

We help Norwich businesses and creative teams choose those pictures before release day. Rather than requesting a little of everything, identify the one announcement that matters and the different audiences who will encounter it. That gives the photography session a clear job.

PORTRAITS / PUBLICITY

One person. More than one introduction.

Someone meeting your team through a website may need a straightforward, approachable portrait. A campaign introducing the same person could allow a more expressive frame. We can plan both within one session without asking the subject to become a different character.

The Hive Kids staff portrait shown here is commissioned work from our wider portfolio. For your Norwich session, agree a small number of clothing and background choices in advance. Bring the items that belong to the role, and leave time for the person to become comfortable before moving through the variations.

PERFORMANCE STILLS / WIDER PORTFOLIO

Publicity can show the work, not just its author.

A performance photograph can communicate relationships, character and scale in a way that a portrait cannot. These commissioned photographs of The Wizard of Oz were taken for Polkadot Pantomimes at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester. They are performance stills, not frames extracted from a film.

For a Norwich production, launch or creative organisation, discuss whether the strongest pictures will come from a rehearsal, a dedicated publicity session or the live occasion. Each offers different control over lighting, positioning and the chance to repeat a moment.

Choose the kind of occasion you need photographed.

01

An arranged publicity session

Set aside time for the agreed people and visual idea. You can plan clothing, props and location together, with room to adjust the photograph before the session ends.

02

A rehearsal or preview

Let the photographer know which scenes or demonstrations will happen. Identify access and lighting restrictions with the production team, particularly when performers need an uninterrupted run.

03

The live launch

Prioritise the moments that genuinely happen once: an introduction, unveiling or audience response. A list of essential people is useful; an expectation that every moment can be restaged is not.

FROM PHOTOGRAPHY TO RELEASE DAY

Keep the release practical.

  1. Before the session

Send the announcement date, intended channels and any layout already designed. Tell us if a portrait must match an existing series or if the image needs space for a headline.

  2. Before selection

Nominate the person who can approve identities, clothing and anything visible about unreleased work. Agree any priority selection separately from the rest of the delivery.

  3. Before publication

Confirm names, credits and permitted uses with your team. Where an embargo applies, explain it in the brief so delivery and access can be arranged around it.

NORWICH / ON LOCATION

A portrait-only appointment and coverage of a live production need different allowances. Your quote defines the session, selection, finishing, intended usage and release requirements. Rush delivery, extra variations and extensive retouching must be agreed rather than assumed.

We plan Norwich visits from Great Cornard near Sudbury. Send the actual studio, office or venue address, the access window and the person who can let us in. If a theatre, gallery or hired location controls photography, its arrangements need to be settled before the booking.

Within 25 driving miles of the quoted base, travel is £0.55 per round-trip mile. Beyond that, mileage is waived and estimated round-trip driving time is charged at £49 per hour. Parking, tolls and other necessary travel costs are agreed separately.

PLANNING YOUR SHOOT

The practical details.

Can we combine portraits with pictures of a launch?

Yes, where the schedule gives the portraits their own time. We can photograph the agreed people before guests arrive, then move to live coverage. The quote should allow for both activities and any change of lighting or location.

Should we use a rehearsal or the live performance?

A rehearsal can offer access or repeatable moments that the live show cannot. A live performance records the actual occasion. We discuss the production's rules and your publicity needs before choosing the appropriate coverage.

Can you help someone who dislikes having a portrait taken?

We give clear direction and build in time to settle, rather than expecting someone to know how to pose. Let us know about any practical preferences or accessibility needs when arranging the appointment.

Can we arrange photographs before an announcement is public?

Tell us the release date, the approver and any embargo or confidentiality requirement before the session. We can agree the delivery process as part of the commission; please do not include sensitive unreleased material in an initial enquiry.

Which examples on this page were photographed in Norwich?

The displayed theatre photographs were made at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester, and the Hive Kids portrait is wider portfolio work. Our Jellyshotz case study separately documents photography and video at Foodies Festival in Norwich; the displayed images are not attributed to that event.

Do you supply a fixed number of publicity images?

We agree the required portraits, scenes and finished selection for the brief. A short portrait session and a performance are different commissions, so an hourly rate does not promise a universal number of delivered photographs.

YOUR NORWICH PHOTOGRAPHY BRIEF

What are you announcing?

Tell us who or what needs introducing, the Norwich location and the date the announcement is due. We can work backwards from that release to plan the photographs.
