What to Film in a Sports Event Highlight Video

THE GAME IS THE CENTRE. THE EXPERIENCE IS THE STORY.

When someone watches a sports event promo, they may be deciding whether to come along for the first time. The sporting action matters, but so do the questions around it: what is the atmosphere like, will children enjoy it, and what happens before the game?

Our 2019 filming for Essex Rebels brought those questions into focus. With a three-hour videographer booking, the brief covered women's and men's basketball alongside the family experience around the arena.

A useful highlight film helps a future visitor picture themselves in the crowd.

Start with the audience you want to welcome

Before writing a shot list, agree who the film should speak to. Existing supporters already know the team. A parent considering a first visit may need to see something different: a friendly arrival, activities for children and a place to get food. Essex Rebels wanted that family-friendly experience to be part of its promotional film, so the brief extended beyond the court.

Film the arrival before it disappears

Entrances and ticketing are time-sensitive. Once spectators have taken their seats, that busy arrival period has passed. Put it into the filming schedule explicitly, rather than hoping to pick it up between games.

An exterior establishes the venue; people entering give it life. For this basketball event, pre-match coverage helped connect the arena itself with the experience of attending. A few purposeful arrival shots can give an edit a clear opening without using much of its running time.

Show what family-friendly actually looks like

A claim becomes more persuasive when viewers can see it. At Essex Rebels, the children’s play area and mascot interactions gave us concrete pictures of the family welcome. The café added another part of the day that mattered to visitors.

When briefing a similar shoot, list the activities that support your message and say when they happen. Keep the list practical: where will the mascot be, when is the play area active, and which spaces are accessible to the videographer? Agree filming arrangements with the organiser before the event, particularly where children will be present.

Balance play with the response to it

Basketball moves quickly. A useful action sequence needs enough context for the viewer to understand the play, alongside closer moments of effort and movement. The spectators supply another part of that sequence: anticipation, cheering and shared excitement.

Both women’s and men’s basketball were included in this booking. A clear brief helps the videographer allocate attention across the event, instead of allowing whichever game is easiest to cover to dominate. Reaction shots can connect those different parts of the programme without suggesting an invented match result.

Make a short booking work with a clear running order

Three hours is a coverage window, so establish what takes priority within it. Share the actual game timings and identify the moments that cannot be repeated. Then fit the supporting material around that structure.

For a promotional film, a concise coverage checklist might include the entrance, family activities, refreshments, each team in action and supporters. This is a planning tool, not a promise to capture every incident. If you also need uninterrupted match recordings, interviews or several simultaneous activities, build those into the scope separately. Our sports event videography services can be planned around those requirements.

Give the edit a purpose beyond a collection of highlights

The Essex Rebels deliverable was a short promotional video for social media and the website. That purpose gave the footage a direction: communicate the energy of the basketball and the appeal of attending in person.

Choose the destination before filming. A website film and a mobile social post may need different framing or versions; agree those deliverables in advance. On this project, the finished film brought the match-day coverage together into one shareable piece.
