Construction and Infrastructure Project Updates: What to Film at Each Stage

Progress needs a reference point

A crane, an excavator and a time-lapse can make a striking construction film without proving that the project has moved forward. A useful update gives viewers reference points: where they are, what changed since the last visit, what is happening now and what comes next.

This stage-by-stage plan is based on the way we approach active industrial locations: agree repeatable positions, capture the work before asking people to describe it, and treat site access as part of production rather than an interruption to it.

The best progress shot is often the ordinary angle you can repeat six months later.

The Camera Guys has filmed project material at Root Power sites including Coryton. Those visits reinforce a practical point: the production plan must fit the live site. The camera crew needs the relevant induction, escort arrangements and agreed safe positions before the first shot is attempted.

Set the record before the first visit

Choose three to six viewpoints that can survive the project. They might include the site entrance, a high corner looking across the works, the principal structure, a services route and the eventual public-facing view. Photograph each position and note the direction, approximate camera height and lens. Mark it on a plan if the ground will change.

These reference shots matter more than cinematic improvisation. When they are repeated at each visit, an editor can make change visible with a cut, dissolve or split screen. If every visit is filmed from a different place, even major progress can be hard to read.

Agree the audience too. Investors may need evidence of milestones and risk management. A nearby community may need traffic, noise and landscape information. Future operators may value access routes, labelling and maintainable details. One filming visit can support all three, but only if the shot list distinguishes them.

What to film at each project stage

1. Pre-start and enabling works

  • the unaltered site from every repeatable viewpoint;
  • boundaries, access roads, neighbouring context and retained features;
  • surveys, fencing, welfare setup and early temporary works;
  • a short project explanation using a plan that viewers can read;
  • any mitigation that will later be hidden, moved or planted.

This is the visit teams most often regret missing. Once excavation begins there is no honest way to recreate the baseline. Record clean stills as well as video; a report, planning update or tender may need a single frame rather than a film.

2. Groundworks and below-ground services

Film trenches and ducts in a sequence that establishes location before showing detail. A close-up of a pipe has little documentary value if nobody can tell where it sits. Start wide, move to the run of the service, then capture joints, labels, crossings and the completed inspection before backfill.

Ask the project lead which elements will disappear that week. Prioritise those over machinery that will still be operating on the next visit. If a dimension or technical result matters, place the verified value in a graphic during editing; do not rely on perspective to communicate scale.

3. Structure, installation and major lifts

For structural work, film connections and sequence, not only the largest machine. Useful coverage might show materials arriving, the lift plan briefing, controlled movement, alignment, fixing and the completed assembly. Capture the people coordinating the operation without directing them or entering their working zone.

Major lifts often offer one attempt. Confirm the likely time window, safe camera positions and whether a remote or locked-off camera is acceptable. Have a second view only when it can be installed without complicating site controls. A missed close-up is less serious than a camera operator becoming a distraction during a critical task.

4. Fit-out, commissioning and testing

At this stage the visible change may become smaller while its technical significance grows. Record labels, screens and indicators only after the client confirms what can be shown. Pair each detail with an interview answer that explains what was tested, what acceptance means and what milestone it unlocks.

5. Completion, handover and operation

Repeat every baseline position. Then film the route a user, operator or visitor will actually take. Capture final landscaping, signage, access, safety systems and the asset doing its intended job. If the update will become a case study, interview the client while decisions and outcomes are still fresh.

Keep snags out of frame only when the film is expressly about the finished result and the client approves that representation. A documentary progress archive should remain accurate. Label versions and dates so an old cut is not mistaken for the current state.

Use interviews to interpret the pictures

One project lead can usually answer the core update. Add a specialist only when they can explain a milestone the lead cannot. Good prompts are factual:

  • What has physically changed since our last visit?
  • Which completed item unlocks the next activity?
  • What problem did the team solve this month?
  • What should be visible by the next update?
  • What does this stage mean for neighbours, customers or operators?

Ask for full answers without putting words in the contributor’s mouth. Then verify dates, capacities, costs and performance claims with the project team before publication. An editor can improve pace, but should not infer technical meaning from attractive footage.

Plan around a live site

HSE guidance says site rules and the construction phase plan must set out health and safety arrangements. Occasional and once-only visitors need an induction proportionate to the visit; escorted visitors still need the main hazards and control measures explained. A film crew is not exempt because the work is observational.

Before arrival, confirm the named site contact, induction time, required PPE, parking, welfare, exclusion zones, emergency arrangements and whether equipment needs to be carried by hand. Build movement into the schedule. A ten-minute walk between approved positions is production time.

On the day, the site manager decides whether a position remains safe. Weather, lifting operations, deliveries and changing ground conditions can invalidate yesterday’s plan. Use longer lenses or remote cameras when appropriate rather than negotiating for proximity.

Drone footage needs its own plan

An aerial view can clarify layout and scale, particularly when matched to the same direction on each visit. It is not automatic. UK Civil Aviation Authority rules depend on the aircraft, operating category, people nearby and location. Airspace rules apply outdoors even when the client owns the land, and restricted airspace may require permission from the relevant aerodrome or site.

Share the site programme and expected personnel numbers with the drone operator early. They need to assess the operation, airspace, take-off area, uninvolved people and weather. If a lawful flight is not possible, a mast, elevated approved position or ground-based reveal may communicate progress just as clearly.

A repeatable update package

For each visit, a practical delivery set might include:

  • a dated 60–120 second stakeholder update;
  • the repeatable wide shots, supplied as labelled selects;
  • ten to twenty captioned still frames for reports;
  • a short vertical edit for recruitment or social channels where appropriate;
  • an archive note listing locations, contributors, claims and restrictions.

Keep the master footage by visit and location rather than placing every file in one project folder. Preserve the ungraded reference shots. The value of a progress archive grows over time, especially when the final film can return to the exact patch of ground where the project began.
