Echelon Studios, Tiptree
Echelon publishes unusually specific dimensions: a 7m × 11m main floor with a 5m cyclorama and 4.2m ceiling, plus a 5m × 6m sound-treated video room and a separate four-microphone podcast suite. The site also lists a loading-bay door, eight-plus crew parking spaces, symmetric fibre and an equipment inventory.
That makes it easy to assess before a recce. It is a strong candidate for an interview or presenter day that needs several looks under one roof. Confirm which lights, grip and backgrounds are included in your booking, and whether the room labelled sound-treated is quiet enough for your dialogue standard during the proposed hours.
Storm Studio, Leigh-on-Sea
Storm separates its offer into a film studio, podcast studio and lifestyle studio. The film space is advertised as a fully soundproofed infinity-curve cyclorama. The lifestyle room includes hair and beauty positions and a kitchen area, making it more relevant than a blank cyc for product demonstrations that need a believable setting.
Ask for floor plans and access dimensions if you have a large set or product. For a branded podcast, check how much of the existing room can be dressed, where logos can sit in each camera angle and whether the quoted service is dry hire or an operated production package.
WVE Studios, Wickford
WVE advertises a sound-treated main video studio with professional lighting and PA, alongside a white infinity-curve space with multiple backdrop options. It also lists parking, changing and make-up facilities and fast connectivity.
The combination suits productions mixing pieces to camera, full-length photography and rehearsal. If recording dialogue, ask whether the PA, ventilation and neighbouring rooms can be silent during takes. “Sound-treated” usually describes control of reflections; it does not by itself guarantee isolation from external noise.
Summer Isle Studios, Suffolk
Summer Isle positions itself as a flexible film-maker-built space with Suffolk’s largest infinity curve and room for set builds, lighting rigs and cast hospitality. It is the option on this list to investigate first when physical scale, construction or a larger company move matters more than multiple pre-dressed content sets.
The public landing page is lighter on dimensions than some Essex options, so request a current floor plan, ceiling and grid heights, power specification, door measurements, parking and a list of included facilities before comparing quotes.
Poppy Productions, Essex
Poppy publishes a 20m² infinity cove, continuous lighting, Colorama backdrops, a pull-out corner set, changing and hair-and-makeup areas. Its site currently lists dry hire at £200 plus VAT for four hours and £300 plus VAT for eight hours.
Published prices make early budgeting useful, but confirm the current total and exactly what “tech support” and lighting cover. A compact cove can be efficient for head-and-shoulders content and products while being restrictive for wide movement or a large group.
Questions that expose the real cost
- Is setup and pack-down inside the hire period? A four-hour booking can leave less than three hours on camera.
- Is the studio soundproofed, sound-treated or neither? Ask what can be heard from roads, aircraft, workshops and ventilation.
- What is the usable cyc width? Floor area alone does not tell you the widest clean frame.
- Can the largest item enter? Check door width, turns, steps, lift capacity and loading distance.
- Which equipment is included? Obtain a named list; “fully equipped” is not a production specification.
- What triggers repaint, cleaning or power charges? Ask about footwear, vehicles, liquids, haze and set construction.
- Who controls the room? Confirm access for your own crew and whether a house technician is compulsory.
Recce the shortlist with one test frame
Take a phone photo or simple storyboard showing the widest intended composition. At the recce, stand the camera where it would need to be and check that the lens, lights, autocue and crew can all fit behind it. Record 30 seconds of room sound with ventilation running. Test mobile reception and the actual wired connection if streaming matters.
