Colour correction and grading are related

Correction addresses technical differences such as exposure, white balance, contrast and camera matching. Grading then makes creative decisions about tone, colour relationships, highlight behaviour, shadow density and visual continuity.

The stages overlap in practice, but the distinction is useful. Applying a strong preset to unmatched material does not remove the underlying inconsistency.

The grade begins during capture

Exposure, white balance, lighting quality, filters, camera settings and recording format determine what information reaches post-production. Reference cards and controlled monitoring can help the colourist interpret material from different cameras or locations.

A flexible recording profile may preserve more adjustment room, but it still needs correct exposure and an appropriate workflow. Grading cannot recover detail that was clipped, missed or heavily compressed.

Colour management gives the images a common basis

Different cameras and graphics may arrive in different colour spaces or transfer functions. The post-production team needs to interpret each source correctly and transform it into a controlled working and delivery process.

This avoids treating flat capture as a finished look or applying transformations twice. The technical method should suit the cameras, software and final destinations rather than follow a fashionable label.

Primary correction balances each shot

The editor or colourist adjusts overall brightness, neutral balance, contrast and saturation while watching relevant scopes as well as the image. Faces, white objects and known references help reveal unintended shifts.

The goal is a stable starting point. One dramatic shot should not force every other image into crushed shadows or clipped highlights merely to match its mistake.

Shot matching creates continuity

Angles recorded moments apart can differ because of auto settings, mixed lights, clouds or changing screen content. Matching makes a cut feel like one scene rather than a sequence of unrelated cameras.

Judge neighbouring shots in context, not as isolated stills. A technically neutral image may still feel wrong if its brightness or colour emphasis jumps against the images around it.

Secondary work protects important areas

Targeted adjustments can refine skin, a product, sky, screen, uniform or distracting colour without changing the whole frame. Masks and tracking may follow a subject where the correction must remain local.

Use restraint. Over-smoothing skin, changing a product finish or removing normal variation can make the film inaccurate even when the image appears polished.

The creative look should serve the story

A grade can feel clean, warm, muted, energetic, restrained or dramatic through coordinated choices rather than one heavy filter. Reference images help when they identify qualities such as soft highlights or natural skin instead of demanding an exact copy.

Keep brand colours and customer expectations in view. A stylised environment must not turn a product, garment, property finish or safety indicator into a misleading colour.

Titles, graphics and archive material need integration

Logos and motion graphics should retain approved colour and suitable contrast. Stock, phone footage, screen recordings and archive clips may need individual treatment so they fit without pretending to have identical technical quality.

Review graphics over their final backgrounds. A brand colour that is accurate numerically can still become hard to read or visually unstable beside a saturated image.

Delivery changes how colour is judged

A controlled monitor provides a dependable reference, but audiences may watch on phones, office laptops, projectors or uncalibrated televisions. The master should be prepared for the agreed colour space and tested through representative delivery paths.

Compression and platform processing can change gradients, dark detail and saturation. Review exported files, not only the timeline inside the grading application.

Approve the grade at the right stage

Agree the look after picture structure is stable, because late shot replacements create matching work and can invalidate tracked corrections. Use one reviewer to consolidate comments and describe the problem—such as a product looking too warm—rather than prescribing an arbitrary slider value.

Where exact colour has commercial importance, provide physical or approved digital references and define a realistic viewing workflow.
