Choose single camera for controlled repetition

One camera suits interviews, scripted scenes, products and processes that can be repeated safely. The team can refine lighting, lens, movement and performance for each setup.

It also creates a smaller footprint and simpler media workflow. The trade-off is that alternate angles happen at different times, so continuity must be maintained.

Choose multiple cameras for simultaneous coverage

Several cameras are valuable for panels, performances, events, demonstrations and reactions that cannot be recreated. A wide safety view can preserve continuity while closer angles follow speakers or detail.

Each position needs a distinct job. Multiple cameras placed together may create more files without protecting another moment, viewpoint or participant.

Interviews need an editorial reason for a second angle

A second interview camera can create pacing options, protect a long answer and provide a closer view. It must preserve eyeline, lighting, background and a sufficiently different composition.

It should not be used to conceal edits that alter meaning. Purposeful B-roll may explain the subject better than repeatedly cutting between two nearly identical views.

Continuity changes with the method

Single-camera scenes need repeatable actions, props, screen content, clothing and performance across setups. Multi-camera capture records the same instant but requires operators to avoid crossing sightlines or appearing in one another’s frames.

Map positions and movement before recording. A camera that blocks the audience, performer or safety route is not useful redundancy.

More cameras change sound and synchronisation

All cameras should share a practical plan for frame rate, colour, time reference and file naming. Separately recorded microphones need reliable identification and synchronisation.

Multi-camera does not mean using every camera microphone as final sound. Capture the sources appropriately and provide a reference that lets the edit align them.

Match cameras before the event begins

Exposure, white balance, picture profile, lens response and framing should be checked together. Different models can work, but their limitations and colour response may create more finishing work.

Changing a setting during continuous coverage can create a visible jump. Assign responsibility for monitoring each angle, power supply and remaining media.

Recording and live switching are different workflows

Isolated recording keeps each angle for post-production. Live switching chooses the programme in real time and may also preserve individual feeds for correction or later versions.

Live work needs communication, monitoring, routing, graphics, playback and failure planning beyond simply adding cameras. State whether the switched output, isolated files or both are deliverables.

Compare the full cost

More cameras can add operators, support, power, media, setup, syncing, storage and colour matching. They may also shorten repeated performances or protect an event that has no second take.

One camera can require extra setup changes and continuity work. Compare the complete capture and edit plan, not a camera count in isolation.
